The legal profession of England and Wales is a global powerhouse and a true global brand, recognised and respected the world over. The international department works on key legal markets, engaging in trade discussions regarding legal services and opening opportunities for our members. We also promote the independence of the legal profession, understood as the ability of lawyers to practise their profession without undue interference, and fair trial rights worldwide through our International Rule of Law programmes (Lawyers at Risk and Capacity-Building).
The Role of an International Policy Adviser
We are looking for a policy adviser to join our International Rule of Law team. The policy adviser researches and monitors legal and policy developments relating to the independence of the legal profession and fair trial rights. They draft a range of submissions, including amicus curiae briefs, Universal Periodic Review reports, trial observation reports, and written evidence to parliamentary committees (such as the Foreign Affairs Committee), as well as internal briefings and reports to officeholders and committees.
The policy adviser carries out effective advocacy at international institutions, such as the United Nations (making use of the Law Society’s ECOSOC status), Council of Europe, Commonwealth Secretariat, as well as with UK parliamentarians and Government departments such as the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and Ministry of Justice. They credibly represent the Law Society at a senior level at external meetings with a range of stakeholders, from lawyers at risk to civil servants, individually or with colleagues.
The policy adviser represents the interests of members by shaping policy on international human rights, especially fair trial rights, as well as implementing and developing the Law Society’s Lawyers at Risk and Capacity-Building programmes. They coordinate with members, lawyers and law firms, who assist the Law Society’s work in this area pro bono. They produce and interpret information for use by decision-makers, in collaboration with colleagues in the international department and across the organisation, as well as for publication on websites and social media. The policy adviser also organises events related to this subject area and coordinates the organisation of events relating to the Opening of the Legal Year.
The policy adviser reports to the International Policy Manager – Human Rights and line manages the International Policy Assistant – Human Rights.
A highly motivated professional with a bachelor’s degree in law and master’s degree in international human rights law or public international law, with a minimum of 4 years working experience in a policy, international or legal environment.
Knowledge of or affinity with international rule of law related matters in a particular geographical region or worldwide, with an understanding of the role of the legal profession.
Strong analytical skills, sound judgement, and a proven ability to work with a variety of stakeholders, including government representatives, NGOs, and human rights defenders.
Ability to work simultaneously and independently on a range of different issues and to advise on policy implications for the profession, the organisation, and its members.
Ability to research and draft briefings and legal submissions and to explain complex issues clearly and concisely, including to the media.
Ability to carry out effective advocacy at a senior level with UK Government, as well as diplomats and officials of international institutions, with tact and diplomacy.
Experience of working as a lawyer in private practice or as in-house counsel is desirable, as is experience in making submissions to international institutions and tribunals.
