A lasting abode permit can be obtained after being a habitual resident in the territory of Hungary for a period of time.
Permanent abode permits can be issued for the purpose of employment, education, or family reunification.
You apply for a Hungary abode permit through the Hungarian National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing website.

How to Get Permanent Abode in Hungary?
To be eligible for permanent abode in Hungary, third-country nationals need to meet the following conditions:
- You must have a place to reside in Hungary and sufficient means of subsistence.
- You must have comprehensive healthcare insurance or enough income for healthcare services.
- You must have a residence permit or an interim lasting abode permit.
- You must have a residence permit in accordance with the interest of Hungary.
- You must have resided in the territory of Hungary for at least three years before the application submission.
- You must be a direct relative of a Hungarian citizen, a third-country national with an immigrant, lasting resident, or refugee status, and must have lived in the same household for at least one year before submitting the application.
- You are the spouse of a Hungarian citizen, a third-country national with immigrant status, a lasting resident, or refugee status, and have been married for at least two years before applying for a permanent abode.
- You are a formerly Hungarian citizen with a terminated citizenship or a Hungarian ascendant.
- You are a minor child of a third-country national with the status of an immigrant, lasting resident, or refugee.
You cannot get a lasting residence permit in Hungary if:
- Your residence in Hungary is considered a threat to the public and national security.
- You are subject to expulsion or exclusion from Hungary or are registered in the SIS for denied entry and the right of residence.
- You have provided false information or untrue facts to obtain the permit.
- You have a criminal record.
You can apply for a lasting abode permit after your temporary residence permit expires.
Required Documents for Hungary Permanent Residence Application
When applying for a Hungarian lasting residence, you must enclose the following documents:
- Passport. Your passport should be valid at the time of application.
- Passport-size photograph. One photograph not older than three months.
- Birth Certificate.
- Marriage Certificate (if applicable).
- Divorce Certificate (if applicable).
- A certificate of clean criminal record within the last six months issued by the competent authority of your home country. (not required for children under 14)
- Means of subsistence. You can prove your means of subsistence with:
- A statement from a Hungarian credit institution concerning your savings account.
- An authentic instrument or private documents proving your financial assets.
- A certificate on your taxable income from work or other similar relationship performant under Hungarian law.
- An authentic instrument or other proof of your income from other profitable activities performed in Hungary on a regular basis.
- A certificate issued by your employer or tax authority as proof you have received regular income from abroad.
- A notarized statement from a family member residing in Hungary promising to support you and documents proving that the family member can provide this support for you.
- Proof of accommodation. Proof of accommodation can be proven by:
- A residential lease contract as proof of rental.
- A document on accommodation by courtesy.
- A document proving the ownership of the residential property by means of a certified copy of the title deed issued within the last 30 days.
- A notarized statement by a family member residing in Hungary holding a long-term visa with the status of an immigrant refugee promising a place of accommodation for you.
- A real estate sales contract and a copy of the decision of the competent Budapest or county government agency granting permission for acquiring a real estate property.
- Health insurance. Provide proof that you have access to health insurance services or you can afford to cover the cost of health services in Hungary.
Requirements for Minors
If you are traveling with your child, you need to submit:
- Your child’s passport.
- A photograph of your child.
- Documents from the competent authority of the home country stating there is no legal impediment for the third-country minor to seek permanent residency abroad.
If the child is traveling alone without the parents, they must submit:
- Letter of consent. Proof that their parents or legal guardian permitted them to stay in Hungary. Parental consent must be provided in a private document with Hungarian or English translation.
Note: If the minor has reached the age of six at the time of the application, he/she must appear in person to submit the application.
Where to Apply for Permanent Residence in Hungary?
You can apply for a lasting abode permit in one of the following ways:
- Electronically
- At the branch of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.
Applying Electronically
You can submit the application for a lasting residence permit electronically after registering on the electronic platform of the immigration authority for procedure initiation. To submit your application online, visit the website of The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing and click on ‘Enter Hungary.’
Applying at the branch of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing
If you are not able to apply online, you can submit the application for a lasting abode permit at the branch of NDGAP (The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing) responsible for the place where your future residence in Hungary is located.
Physical appearance is required when submitting the application unless you are exempt from this requirement due to health conditions.
If the physical appearance is not mandatory by law, you can be substituted by:
- Your legal representative.
- Your spouse who has obtained the right of residence in Hungary for a period of 90 days.
Your spouse can be substituted by:
- His/her adult child with the right of residence in Hungary for a period of 90 days.
- A person appointed by the applicant.
Note: Your application for a residence permit will be taken into consideration only if you have paid the administration fee and have taken your biometrics no later than 15 days after the NDGAP sent you the confirmation on your application.
How Long Does It Take to Process?
The processing time for obtaining permanent residency can take 1 to 2 months.
Can I Lose My Permanent Residence?
The immigration authority can withdraw your lasting abode permit if:
- You disclose false information or untrue facts to the immigration authority with the purpose of obtaining a residence permit.
- The immigration authority has withdrawn the authorization for the right of residency in Hungary of a person exercising parental custody over a minor.
- Your Hungarian spouse exits Hungary to obtain a residence abroad, or their residence in Hungary is terminated.
- You are expelled or excluded.
- The registration of the government securities has not taken place within 45 days of issuing the permanent residence.
- You request the withdrawal of the permit.
How Long After Permanent Residency Can I Apply for Hungary Citizenship?
Before applying for Hungarian citizenship, you must have five years of uninterrupted legal stay in Hungary and meet the conditions for a lasting residence.
A lasting abode is valid for five years, and you can proceed to apply for citizenship once the permanent residence permit expires and you are certain that you meet the conditions for citizenship.
