The Harvard University Academy Scholarship for International Students is a program designed to help foreign students from all over the world further their education by providing scholarship opportunities for qualified Ph.D. and doctoral recipients.
The Academy Scholarship program is tailored to students who intend to enroll in Harvard University Ph.D. and doctoral degree programs. The scholarship program is aimed at promoting academic excellence by encouraging ability and dedication through financial assistance to qualified candidates in the social sciences or law.
The scholars that will qualify for this program must have a good command of the English language and must be based outside of the United States or Canada and must show passion for transnational law, international relations, and cross-cultural awareness.
The Academy Scholarship program has been in place for years and was implemented to encourage more research and study in the areas of international relations, politics, law, and social sciences for candidates that reside outside the United States.
The selected scholars are awarded a two-year postdoctoral fellowship that does provide the scholars with funding for their study at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Cambridge, Massachusetts. They will receive substantial funding for their research projects and to cover living expenses during their time at the academy.

Harvard University Academy Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Harvard University Academy Scholarship for International Students, applicants must meet the following conditions. Candidates from the social sciences or law must have completed their degrees in the last four years prior to the date of application. Applicants must be non-US citizens; they must also have a strong command of the English language and have a desire to study cross-cultural awareness and international relations or law at Harvard University. Stateless students, who do not hold US citizenship or permanent US residence status, may also apply for this scholarship.
Applicants must show excellent academic performance; they should also demonstrate commitment to study at Harvard University and have excellent research potential. Candidates must be recent Ph.D. or doctoral degree recipients in the law or social sciences. The scholarship program is open to Ph.D. candidates that have completed their academy training with competencies to write their theses required to become an Academy Scholar. For those that have completed their study, they can only apply within three years of completing their Ph.D. program in view of the application date.
Scholarship Amounts
Candidates who are selected before getting a Ph.D. degree will receive $35,000 annually. The stipends are in addition to the travel and accommodation expenses during the scholars’ time at Harvard University. In addition, those who have not graduated from their Ph.D. program will receive $70,000 for research project funds that will be made available to them when they enroll in this program.
Application Process
To apply for this scholarship, interested candidates must submit an online application which includes copies of their cover letter, resume with a list of publications, research proposal, Ph.D. transcript, and three letters of recommendation.
The letters should be directed to the “selection committee” and uploaded online before the deadline of October 1.
If the applicant is no longer a Ph.D. candidate, they must also attach copies of their letters of recommendation. Those who have a Ph.D. should attach the degree and dissertation submitted.
